Food systems approach

The global ambitions to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture (SDG2) demand a complex transition of the current food system. At the same time, the food system must also respond to challenges like climate change, resource scarcity, (youth) employment and gender equality. The multiple aspects of food production and consumption are closely interconnected and activities in one part of the food system can result in (unintended) outcomes in other areas of food, socio-economic or environmental systems. A food systems approach is expected to help manage such trade-offs and identify options for synergy.

COVID-19

The impact of COVID-19 is growing and increasingly visible. As it affects food systems worldwide, public and private actors are identifying the short and long term consequences of this crisis for SDG2 to see what can be done to mitigate its impacts, and how food systems can be strengthened in their response. In the process of identifying the short and long term consequences of the COVID-19 crisis for SDG2, governments, research and aid organisations, as well as businesses are all creating and sharing a great variety of information. NFP provides an overview of shared resources and other information in relation to the work of the Communities of Practice.

Horticulture

The role of the horticulture sector is of increasing relevance in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The sector is expected to contribute in different ways to the achievement of several of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG2 (Zero hunger). It can help advancing nutrition outcomes, as a result of an increased production and consumption of fruits and vegetables. It also brings many other benefits, such as enhanced income and employment opportunities for smallholder farmers and other value chain participants, empowerment of youth and women, and more sustainable agriculture.
