Youth agripreneurship is increasingly put forward as a potential solution to foster decent employment for youth, boost agricultural production and tackle rising food insecurity. But despite the popularity of youth agripreneurship initiatives the evidence base on their effectiveness is still thin. As a result, a range of misconceptions and missed opportunities undermine the effectiveness of these programmes.

Based on a research project by The Broker, this first session will provide an overview of what is currently known about what works. Specifically, how better targeting, combinations of supply and demand side interventions and meaningful youth engagement can play a role in improving the effectiveness of programming. During the session we will exchange with experts from civil society, policy, academia and youth networks to test assumptions and deepen our understanding of common challenges to formulate actionable ways forward.

This session prepares the way for a second session in mid-November, which will identify actionable opportunities to bring youth agripreneurship programming to a new level of effectiveness, and how knowledge platforms, such as INCLUDE and NFP, can support the development sector in catalysing decent job creation in the agricultural sector for Africa’s youth.
