A recent study by Wageningen University and Research (WUR), concluded that “Ethiopia is a dairy giant, which is starting to awake”. So this is the moment to focus more on dairy in Ethiopia!

The upcoming African Livestock Exhibition and Congress (ALEC) taking place in Addis Ababa, will include a wide range of interesting dairy focussed activities. ALEC has proved to be the primary and most significant event for livestock sector development in East Africa and is anticipated to be held live (in-person) between 28 - 30 October. The Congress aims to bridge the various gaps in the livestock value chain, by attracting numerous visitors and exhibitors from all over the world. More details and about ALEC can be found here.

Dairy is one of the focus sectors at the Exhibition and an interesting one for the Ethiopian market. The Business Opportunity Report on Dairy in Ethiopia, which has recently been initiated by the Embassy, revealed that the number of dairy processing firms in Ethiopia has significantly increased during the last decade. Although challenges remain at the production level, important changes to the dairy industry in Ethiopia are also being addressed.

Outline of the webinar

The Embassy is currently working with several partners to organise a webinar on dairy in Ethiopia on Thursday 9 September 2021, at which guest speakers will include private sector experts, active in the dairy value chain in Ethiopia.
