Last Food & Business Research projects nearing completion

In 2021 the last Food & Business Research projects financed through Global Challenges Programme and Applied Research Fund are being finalised. From 2014 until 2021 WOTRO, the Science for Global Development department of NWO (the Dutch Research Council) managed the Food & Business Research funding aimed at addressing persistent food security challenges in low and middle income countries. It consisted of two Programmes: the Global Challenges Programme and the Applied Research Fund. Both programmes were part of the Food & Business Knowledge Agenda of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Netherlands Food Partnership supported in scope defining of the various calls and supported the research projects in sharing, uptake and impact generation of their research results. 75 Project pages have been developed containing various project items and information. Throughout the years many programme related activities have been conducted, including in particular workshops and events. In 2020-2021 an extensive synthesis study has been conducted drawing lessons from main themes and subjects of the 75 projects.

Global Challenges Programme Overview

Since the start of the programme in 2013, there have been four calls of the Global Challenge Programme. The objective of the Global Challenges Programme was to promote research-based advanced understanding of emerging key issues in global and regional food security and their impact on local food security and the role of private sector development. Applied Research Fund Overview

Since the start of the programme in 2014, there have been three Calls of the Applied Research Fund with various rounds each. The objective of the Applied Research Fund was to promote demand driven research and supported innovations that contribute to food security and private sector development in Dutch partner countries. Food & Business Research Synthesis study

In 2021 the last Food & Business Research projects financed through Global Challenges Programme and Applied Research Fund are being finalised. In 2020-2021 it was time to take stock of the achievements. Therefore a synthesis study of the programme was conducted, providing insights into research results and outcomes on policy and practice. The Synthesis Study is executed by independent consultants Daniëlle de Winter and Ellen Lammers. Various thematic and approach articles have been published and related knowledge items such as webinars and podcasts developed.
