Webinar series # 5 | Tropical commodities to boost food systems transformation

The production and trade of international commodities, such as coffee and cocoa, are critical sectors of employment in producing countries and satisfy the demand for these popular products in consuming countries. This webinar will explore the importance of a food systems perspective in shaping actionable interventions that benefit the sector, people’s livelihoods and environmental outcomes.

Tropical commodities like cocoa and coffee are important global value chains that connect between producing countries and consumer countries. However, in many cases the value of raw produce in producing countries is significantly lower than the value of the finished products in consuming countries. In addition to the economic issues, tropical commodities are also associated with issues such as deforestation and child labour.

In this webinar we focus on the cases of cocoa and coffee. We will explore some fundamental questions relating to the production, processing and consumption of tropical commodities. How can we make sure that these popular products do not cause negative effects in the countries that produce them? How can we make sure farmers that produce the raw materials for these products do not live below poverty levels? And finally: who should take the responsibility in shaping interventions that work: companies, traders, governments or consumers? Does a food systems lense help

In this webinar, we have invited three experts for interviews and a panel discussion.

  • Yuca Waarts, senior researcher sustainable value chains, Wageningen UR
  • Nico Janssen, programme manager Agricultural Livelihoods at IKEA Foundation
  • James Kisekka, team leader at Aidenvironment for the Green Future Farming Programme
