Webinar Series | Putting Food Systems Thinking Into Sector Practice

As part of the work that Wageningen University & Research (WUR) and Netherlands Food Partnership (NFP) are delivering to drive the SDG2 agenda forward, we’ll be facilitating a ‘Putting Food Systems Thinking into Sector Practice’ six-part webinar series for agrifood practitioners, who are actively interested in taking action towards achieving concrete positive food systems results.

The six plus one webinar series is aimed towards food professionals and agfrifood practitioners who are actively interested in taking action towards achieving concrete positive food systems results.

Using real life case studies, we will demonstrate how integrated food systems and sector frameworks can be developed into workable tools, by dissecting and examining the following themes and topics:

  • 3 March - Importing of cheap poultry products - a key obstacle for African poultry sector development?: This case study will particularly focus on the role that international and regional trade plays, as key socio-economic drivers of the food system. 
  • 17 March - Youth and women empowerment in the horticulture sector: Overcoming challenges to reach empowerment: This case study will apply food system perspectives, to identify leverage points that strengthen the food security and nutrition outcomes for women and youth in the horticulture sector. 
  • 31 March -Policy decision making on food system transformation: Representatives from Embassies of the Netherlands based in a variety of countries, will reflect on their  experiences of putting food systems transformation into practice. The session will deepen participants’ understanding of the role of policy as a food system socio-economic driver and  how this helps to achieve multiple food system outcomes. 
  • 21 April - Protein transition - a key ambition of food system transformation: This case study will focus on climate adaptation through innovation, as well as the  role  of the private sector in leading this process. The webinar will also broaden participants' understanding of the influence of environmental drivers and outcomes on the food system. 
  • 12 May - Tropical commodities to boost food systems transformation:  International commodity production and trade, such as coffee, tea, and cocoa, are critical to sustainable employment in producing countries and to satisfy the demand for these popular products in consuming countries. This webinar will explore the importance of a food systems perspective in shaping actionable interventions that benefit the sector, people’s livelihoods and environmental outcomes.
  • 2 June - Sesame sector transformation: Participants will learn about practises implemented in Ethiopia, and the many lessons learned on how complex, multi-stakeholder, farmer-owned sector transformation agendas have evolved and developed into workable food systems agendas.
